C287 – Asking for Rain (IV)

“Stop them! Just stop it!”

The chief shouted and rushed over there.

He was planning to watch the joke here, but not too near. However, after seeing what this young man Yang Sui has planned, he was all green with remorse.

This was done in the face of him, the new chief, which was a provocation to the ancestors! Offending the gods!

But then, thinking about it, it seemed… probably…… as if…… The ancestors did not say that they must use a specific kind of people to be the Shaman.

But Yang Sui’s behavior was indeed a provocation to the ancestors. In his view, it was a very unlucky act.

When the new chief screamed at them, Yang Sui and his party had already embarked on the steps of the altar for the rain ceremony.

Once on this platform, it meant that rain ceremony has begun.

Chasing them up to here with clenched fists, he endured and almost spit out blood but didn’t pull his knife towards Yang Sui to slash at him. If Yang Sui did not set foot on the altar, he would really kill the man on the spot and no one would say anything about him. However, these people moved too fast that he was finally a step too late.

The poisoned knife-like eyes swept towards the nine people that stepped on the platform. The chief took a step back to not stay too close to fire pit, afraid of contaminating it by bad luck. Now he can’t move, but when the ceremony is over … Yang sui, wait for your death! Sacrifice your blood to the gods!

Yang Sui did not look back and see how the horde reacted. But listening to the sound below, he knew what his fate would be. At this time, he regreted again. Perhaps, before this, he should have given up so as not to let the tribal people react so much. He was most worried about his friends and relatives who followed him here.

Thinking, unconsciously, Yang Sui’s steps were somewhat hesitant and slowed down.

Just then, Yang Sui heard the words from behind him.

“Come on. You can’t go back, keep walking!” This was the voice his mother.

“We are coming up.” There is no plan to go back.” This was the mother of Mi Fu.

“Don’t worry, we’ll stay with you.” This was Mi Fu.

While the others were silent, Yang Sui listened closely to his footsteps and knew they had chosen.

Yang Sui held the ox’s tail in his hand and, because of too much force, his veins bulged. After a short pause, his foot lifted up again.

For the rain ceremony, on the platform, there were the prepared sacrificial artifacts, decorations, ceremonial and so on. In addition, the ceremony also needed to have a prescribed rain dance and the necessary message or “mantra.” Whether it was the rain dance or the message, there was a need to have a music accompanying and it naturally had to be played.

Originally, Yang Sui paid a large amount of coins for this, but, when he reached the high platform, he found that his father, uncle, grandfather with his old body … were all up there.

While Yang Sui stared at them sitting there, his father took the bamboo percussion in his hands, then smiled at Yang Sui.

Come, we have no plans to go any further.

Maybe. Without waiting for the ceremony to end, the tribe would put firewood on the platform and ignite the fire.

Yang Sui stood on the platform, looking at the people around him, giving them back a smile, although this laugh looked like he was crying.

Pound Bang Bang Bang—

The rhythm of the music sounded.

Yang Sui had his hands on the tail, looking at the center of the high-rise rain stone, then he closed his eyes. There was never such a moment that he expected the sky to rain. Just few drops were fine.

Though he had always doubted the ancestors, he now questioned the gods. He had been stomaching it for many times, but at the moment, he really hoped that the ancestors and the gods would be able to help him this time, just this once. He was willing to pay any price.

Yang Sui respectfully held the tail with both hands to bring it to the rain stone with a flick of his sleeves.

The wide sleeves were somewhat hard because of the material used, which was not as good as gauze ribbons. But with the waving of his hands, those wooden nut bells on the sleeves also swung with the arm, issuing a clatter of sound.

The jumps of the nine dancers and the twisting of their limbs made the clatter more dense, like the sound of rain hitting the ground.

The Rain tribe’s rain dance has one characteristic, it needed to be dance while facing up.

For many tribes, it was not uncommon for the ritual dance to occasionally be facing down. However, the Rain tribe’s was different. Their ritual dance must have the dancers always looking up and facing the sky. They worshipped the gods of rain, which was naturally located in the sky. If they wanted to pray to the gods, wish and speak of the desire of all in the tribe, hope for their blessing to eliminate the scourge of disaster, then they had to look up to the sky with devotion.

Yang Sui also took this opportunity to observe the movement in the sky.

Although the dust and sand were flying, making his eyes unable to be opened wide or the sand might blind him, Yang Sui could still see the changes in the sky, which was his ability different to others. That was how he could speculate about the weather.

No rain!

There was no sign of rain!

Yang Sui continued as he gritted his teeth. He knew he was different from others, and he had always been proud of this ability. Maybe he could really break the deadlock and do what the ancestors couldn’t do? If he worked harder, maybe soon, since he did not need a heavy rainfall, just a drop or two. Two drops was fine.

Gradually, he felt the strength of his body being pumped away, feeling the change in the fire seed.

Although the sky still showed no rain, since the fire seed showed a reaction, it was good!

To those in the Rain tribe standing under the platform, they couldn’t see the situation farther up. However, to some people close to the fire pit, they could feel the change in the fire seed.

The chief saw the fire inside the firepit change from the original red color to gradually become lighter. The surrounding temperature seemed to have lowered too.

“This … This … ” An old man rubbed his eyes, and there was disbelief in his face.

The muscles on He Chao’s face twitched as he said, “In the past, when the Shaman call for rain, there have been such situations, but ultimately, it did not succeed.”

The sharp eyes of an old man on the side swept over which made He Chao’s scalp numb. He originally wanted to add something, but he had to shut his mouth. Although there were many people who supports them, there were still some neutral people who do not care who the Shaman was as long as there was success in calling for rain.

However, not long after, as He Chao said, the fire with the lighter color and low temperature began to return to its original state.

To those who were looking forward to the success of the rain ceremony, their eyes were full of disappointment.

For Yang Sui who was asking for rain, even if he could not see the change on the fire seed, he could still feel that the heart has cooled. Even if he had an early psychological preparation, to this time, he was still extremely disappointed.

Just like in the wake of a hysterical roar, he found that the person who wanted to awaken would only slowly yawn, then continue to sleep.

Not reconciled, but useless.

The rain dance was almost finished.

After the fire seed became shallow, it restored to its original fire color.

Standing at the bottom, He Chao’s eyes flashed as he saw the pile of the big bundle of firewood not far from the fire pit. He was excited that he shook a little, eager to laugh out. Now, he was only hoping that the rain ritual on the high platform to quickly end. As long as it ended, he would be able to set fire on the high platform!

At the moment, at the border of the Rain tribe, Shao Xuan who stayed in the log house was puzzled as he observed a new pattern appearing inside the egg-shaped “shell”.

The new pattern Shao Xuan has seen here was carved like the totem outside the wooden house they were living in.

This was the totem of the Rain tribe!

Same as the totem of the Drumming tribe, it was far smaller than the totem of the Flaming Horns tribe, but only appeared on the side, near the “egg shell”.

Note: I actually don’t remember Xuan having the Drumming tribe’s totem in his sea of consciousness.
