This novel is a mix of Investiture of The Gods and modern xianxia. Pretty much everything in the novel is recycled from either Investiture of The Gods or modern xianxias like BTTH and honestly it does neither well, aside from the very beginning of the novel which is really good. The plot evolves with people being captured and Gu Hai rescuing them over and over again, that or him helping them with something. There's quite literally nothing else aside from what happens in between when he's doing one of those two things — sometimes both simultaneously, believe it or not. I didn't bother to count, but I'm pretty sure people got captured over 20 times in less than 500 chapters... Sometimes he rescues someone and they get captured again right after. No, I'm not joking. His personality is basically "being smart" and "being good", but his "being smart" is just an overly-forced plot armor which is cool at the beginning, but gets old quite fast because it feels way too forced.

If anyone wants to read this work, read it. this is a great piece of work, don't read the comments judge for yourself. the mc is like the embodiment of the red priest. Warmonger, cruel, merciless, but he was kind to his people. the respected emperor reminds me of the roman dymirti.

this novel is perfect. the many Chinese myths really add to the mystery. MC's ability to copy songs and poetry from the earth is also amazing, especially his depictions. The moment I really liked was when MC read the opposing Empire's poetry and the moment when he read the Dao Laozi scripture. both moments gave me goosebumps. MC's struggle in bringing his wife back to life was also very touching, I often cried in several parts about the character's attachment. what I like most is mc's intelligence and manipulation. and of course MC's ability to play chess (Go). the first time he summoned a cloud monster from earth using go formation and the cloud monster came to life gave me goosebumps. then given another plotwis about the eternal horizon of yin-yang. perfect💯💯

yeah bro. when I read it I was also shocked. that's a cruel plotwis the author is very heartless. luckily even though our mc suffered the loss of many wives he will bring them back to life in the next volume

Without spoilers? Excellent world and character building. Superb translation including explanations of idioms. Many cultural/historical (chinese) references. MC and underlying story that does not follow most of the tropes. Out of all the novels I have read I would say this is in the top 5%. And that includes every single one here if you search by rating or ranking. (Top 100 or 50 at the time of this comment.) That said. I am dropping this excellent series. i.e. I don't mind tragedy...but I prefer more of an upside in my reading. I may take it up again though, after I buy enough chocolate and ice cream for a mood boost.

This has to be one of the most chinese novels in existence. Only thing more chinese I can think of is probably Mount Hua Sect. It barely has anything inspired by the western world. I personally found it quite funny.

I'm sorry but what did you mean by that? Minimal Western (aka xuanhuan) influence? Period piece? Historical? Cultural /contextual humor? Extremely nationalistic?

Maybe I should've worded it differently since multiple people seem to have misunderstood it 😭😭😭 I wasn't trying to sound detrimental or anything. I just found the fact that it reminded me of a lot of chinese novels and clichés quite amusing.

You misunderstood me bro. The novel just has a lot of chinese clichés and almost no western influence at all. All the names also exude chinese literature, and everything in the novel just reminds me of other chinese novels I've read. I wasn't trying to be noxious or anything, just found it slightly amusing :)

I also was not trying to be sarcastic bro, I literally don't understand what you were trying to say lol. Now I understand what you mean. Well this is written by a Chinese author and you know how are these authors. They rarely mention western culture and if they mention they only criticize it
