Chapter 19: Conversation about The Break

When she heard no reply from me after a few minutes, she said "I was enslaved because I tried to steal something important from the village chief". I thought 'She's annoying'. I guessed that because she wasn't alone and I was a slave as well, she therefore tried to make a conversation. All humans wanted social interactions until they were left alone without being able to interact for a long time.

I thought about what she said 'Something important… it could be the manual that they practice'. I opened my eyes and asked "Was it some sort of manual that he has?" I could see amazement on her face. She asked "How did you know?" to which I snorted and replied "Because his granddaughter beat me up countless times and I don't believe any woman should be this strong without practicing something"

She was astonished again, then I realised something. 'Wait! She tried to steal something. This means she should have some skills, even though she was caught!'. I asked her a probing question "Why did you do it?" to which a hint of hatred appeared on her face, then she responded "Because it belongs to me!"

'That is a bombshell' I thought. 'So the manual they have was stolen or perhaps it was sold and she wanted it back'. I asked another question "How can you prove it's yours?". To which she snorted this time and said "Because it belonged to my parents!" I asked again "How can you prove that? Everyone can just claim it's theirs". She answered immediately "My parents left their notes inside. They mentioned me."

I asked "Did you practice this manual?" to which she answered "No" so I asked "Why?", she said "Because I was too young and I couldn't practice it but I knew what it looked like and saw the insides. It's just that I don't remember any of it, I was a child."

'This seems weird a bit' I thought. Then I asked again "How do you know that the manual belonging to Rand is actually yours?" she then answered "It's because I saw his training. It's a long story. I can tell if you want to hear it" to which I answered "No need". 'I didn't want to hear the story, I was a bit intrigued that was all'. I then moved my questioning to her skills "How did you want to steal it? I don't suppose you just barged in like nothing and demanded it" to which she went a bit red on her face and didn't answer. 'No, don't tell me, she really did that.... She's hopeless, just hopeless'

I said to her "So you went and demanded it back and you were enslaved. Didn't you say you tried to steal it?" to which she answered "It was because he didn't give it back and just laughed in my face saying, take it yourself if you can". 'Ufff, that was close, I thought those were bogus charges and she had no skills' I asked again "So you tried to steal it, how?"

To which she narrowed her eyes and said "Why do you want to know?". 'At least she can figure some basic stuff out' I thought. She was suspicious why I asked the question and normally she should be but I wasn't interested in that manual. Sure, if I could get my hands on it, I would take it but I wanted sneaking skills. I wanted to know how to be invisible!

I said to her "It's not what you think. I want to know if you can be invisible. Or to put it differently, If you can hide very well" to which she answered "Why do you need that?" and I said "Do I have to explain everything?" after that she seemed kind of pissed so I went straight to the point. "I want to learn those skills" to which she answered "Why?"

I got up from the floor and moved towards her. She was startled as if I wanted to do something to her and she said "Stop!" I was a bit confused and just replied without slowing my pace "I just want to take my pillow from the bed" I lied of course as I didn't want everyone to hear what I was about to say.

She relaxed a bit but was still on guard. I got closer to her, grabbed the pillow and said "Walls have ears. I want to learn it because I don't think they will ever release me" and I went with the pillow back to the wall I came from. I could accept them knowing I want to learn stuff but my plan couldn't be known. I didn't know if I could trust her but If she really taught me some skills, it was a risk worth taking. Besides she would have to be a very good actress to fake all of her expressions and answers.

When I sat down I said "It's because of those stupid village kids. They always chase me and if I learned to hide myself better, I would be able to avoid them better". I lied of course but I needed to say that just in case someone was listening.

She apparently got my meaning and asked "What will I get in return?". I went into deep thought. I didn't think about that. I just demanded to learn something for free but there was no free stuff in this world. I remembered she wanted a bed so I said "How about you get the bed then? I will make one for myself?" To which she answered "Aren't you a bit too shameless? You already promised me a bed"

'Right, I did do say that I will make one for her' I thought. But I had nothing of value! What could I give her? I asked her "What do you want then? You know well enough I have nothing" She pointed a finger at me and motioned with it to come over. I was a bit confused but then I realised she probably wanted to say something quietly.

I got up again and took the pillow with me. When I approached her and put the pillow down she said "Help me run away as well". I furrowed my brows and said "It's time for me to go to work" out loud. Then I whispered "I will think about it" and left the house.
