This is probably racist, but do Chinese people have to actually go back and forth with the "Here's a gift" "No, I can't accept this gift" "ar har har, you're so humble! I insist, take this gift" "ah, fine, I'll take the gift!" Every conversation feels like it's this same exact format. Is this normal, or does the author not know how to talk to other humans? It would make me sick if I had to act this way with every other person I met.

  Late reply but it is most likely a form of etiquette. Despite the fact that they do indeed appreciate and want the gift or something, they would refuse first then accept after the 2nd insistence. The only true decision would be whether or not the recipient declines the gift again.
